Balinese "Day of Silence"
When is Hari Raya Nyepi? |
|||||||||||||
|
It is celebrated on the first new moon after the Vernal Equinox. It is generally celebrated on the same day as the Indian festival, Ugadi.
Celebrations are centred on Bali and take two forms.
Firstly according to custom, the arrival of Spring is the time of year when the Lord of Hell sends all the devils to Bali, who must then be cleared out to purify the island before the new year begins.
run through the streets of villages and towns, with their faces painted, making as much noise as they possibly can.
The evil spirits are driven away by the local people who make massive papier-mache effigies of the evil spirits called 'Ogoh Ogoh'. The Ogoh Ogoh are then paraded through towns and villages while people with their faces painted make as much noise as they possibly can to scare the monsters away. In the evening the effigies are ceremoniously burnt, followed by dancing, drinking feasting and generally unabashed partying.
This noisy, brash festival is then followed by Nyepi, the Balinese "Day of Silence". Nyepi, marks the start of the New Year and the arrival of spring. Beginning at 6 am and lasting until 6 am the following day, Nyepi is a day intended for self-reflection and anything that might disturb this is not allowed.
This means no cooking or fires, no entertainment, no travelling and no work of any kind is permitted.
This means that the usually busy streets of Bali fall silent and even though Nyepi is a Hindu festival, non-Hindu residents of Bali will also observe the day of silence out of respect for their fellow citizens. Tourists are free to do what they want inside their hotels but nobody is permitted onto the beaches or streets. The airport in Bali will also be closed for Nyepi.
The day after Nyepi, is known as Ngembak Geni, and as daily routines get back to normal, this is a day to perform religious rituals and ask forgiveness for past deeds to start the new year with a clean slate.

What is the most beautiful place to visit in Indonesia?
Indonesia is a wonderful country that has many amazing beautiful tourist attractions to visit. Among the thousands of those incredible places, which one is the most fascinating among the others? In this article, we will discuss ten most beautiful tourist places in Indonesia that should be visited if you have a chance to visit this country.
In this article, we will focus more on the places that have great natural beauty. These places are not only great for having fun, but also very romantic for honeymoon purpose, or can be a great place for your wedding. Without further ado, here are 10 most beautiful tourist spots in Indonesia:
10. Mount Bromo
Mount Bromo indeed has stunning natural beauty. This mountain is located in East Java province and it is one of the volcanoes in Indonesia that is still active. This tourist spot is very interesting for nature lovers who want to enjoy the challenge to climb Mount Bromo and enjoy the beautiful scenery from the peak of this mountain.
The beauty of Mount Bromo is unquestionable. Besides having beautiful natural scenery and fresh mountain air, the crater of Mount Bromo caldera is also the main attraction for tourists and photographers who want to capture its beauty. One more great thing, visiting Mount Bromo is relatively easier and cheaper compared to other tourist places in Indonesia that are included in this article.
9. Lake Toba
As the largest volcanic lake in the world, Lake Toba is famous among international tourists from different countries. Located in the province of North Sumatra, Lake Toba has inexplainable grandeur that radiates from its natural beauty. In the middle of the lake stands the unusually large size Samosir Island. The island is also formed by volcanic activity of this lake millions of years ago.
There are many stories related of Lake Toba which mostly explain about how this lake comes into existence. Well, if you happen to be there, be sure to allocate some times to listen the legends of Lake Toba from the local people. The stories are amazing, although some of them may not be too logical.
8. Ujung Kulon National Park
This place is very interesting, especially for photographers who love to capture the beauty of nature through their cameras. Indeed, Ujung Kulon is famous as a wildlife sanctuary for the one-horned rhino, one of the typical Indonesian fauna. If you are lucky, you can get a lot of cool pictures of the rhinos in the wild.
However, Ujung Kulon is not just about wildlife sanctuaries and one-horned rhino. You can find wonderful places and attractions this location, such as waterfalls and hot springs. Indeed. this is a perfect location for an adventure to explore the nature.
7. Danau Kelimutu (Lake Kelimutu)
Lake Kelimutu may be referred to as one of the most amazing tourist locations in Indonesia. This giant lake has three different colors -mostly green, blue, and jade- caused by the vegetation inside the lake as well as the sun rays reflection. In the moment when Kelimutu Lake reaches its peak beauty, there are certainly thousands of tourists from different countries visit this place in order to capture the beauty of this lake.
This lake's color can vary from green jade, a jet-black and horrible, then changed again to brown color, or even dark blue. This miraculous phenomenon certainly makes Lake Kelimutu can be named as the most beautiful lake, not only in Indonesia, but also in Asia
6. Way Kambas
Just like Ujung Kulon, Way Kambas is a tourist spot as well as nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries for Indonesian's nearly extinct animals. Way Kambas is located in Lampung, a province on the southern tip of Sumatra Island. This place should be called as the paradise of adventurers and an ideal "hunting" place for photographers.
Way Kambas is also often referred as "the African continent in Indonesia". This park has hundreds of species of beautiful animals, ranging from Lampung elephant, Sumatran tiger, rhino, and a variety of exotic birds. All of those animals live freely in the Way Kambas park, and if you are lucky, you can take some very cool photos of those animal during the safari tour.
5. Bali
Who would doubt the beauty of the beaches in Bali and its extravagant nightlife? Many people in the world know a lot of things about Bali, but ironically they know nothing about Indonesia. Some of them are not even aware that Bali is a part of Indonesia. Some disasters that happened in Bali such as terrorist bombing, tsunamis, and political riots can't even prevent domestic as well as foreign tourists to visit this place. Indeed, the beauty of Bali is irresistible.
Besides beaches, Bali also offers cultural attractions and exciting nightlife. Amazingly, you can enjoy all of this on a beautiful beach and filled with pretty girls. The beauty of the island makes even big Hollywood stars have their vacation and honeymoon party in this place.
4. Goa Gong (Gong Cave)
Not many foreign and even local tourists aware with the beauty of the cave that is located in East Java. Indeed, from outside Goa Gong looked unimpressive, even seems bleak. However, if you enter this cave, be prepared to be impressed and by the views of various stalactites and stalagmites that formed various beautiful natural sculptures and shine brightly as crystals.
Goa Gong can be a challenging tourist location for photographers. Besides it is not easy to take good pictures in the dark, low light cave, it is also required to have special skills to photograph the configurations of those stalactites and stalagmites as the place is very narrow, slippery, and even dangerous. It is a great place for those of you who love exploration.
3. Raja Ampat Islands
These islands are located in the West Papua and recently skyrocketed in popularity among local as well as foreign tourists. In this place, there are various beautiful nature to explore, ranging from mountains, beaches, oceans, or virgin forest. If you want to enjoy the authentic rural life and food from the locals, you can also easily do it in Raja Ampat Island.
Although its beauty is amazing, to have a holiday in Raja Ampat you will need a lot of money because the airfare and transportation to reach this place is relatively expensive. However, I'm sure you will not regret every single dime that you spent because Raja Ampat is incredibly amazing place and even recognized as one of the most beautiful tourist places in Indonesia by Lonely Planet.
2. Komodo Island
The name of this island indeed sounds exotic and wild, that's what comes to our mind after hearing "Komodo Island". The tourist site that is located in the province of East Nusa Tenggara is indeed promises a lot of things to be explored; in particular: natural beauty, beaches, and wild mountains. Because of this enormous beauty, this place was even nominated as one of the seven wonders of the world.
Komodo Island is a wildlife sanctuary for Komodo Dragon, the only pre-historic animal that still exists in this century. On this island, you can enjoy the beauty of the nature, the wonderful luxurious hotels, as well as the wild adventure along with those wild and fierce Komodo Dragons.
1. Bunaken Marine Park
For those of you who seek the beauty of the beach and love to dive to explore the beautiful sea, Bunaken National Park is a must-visit location. Located in the province of North Sulawesi, Bunaken has over twenty dive sites that you can visit. During your diving experience, you will find many coral reefs in a variety of colors that are stunningly beautiful.
In my opinion, Bunaken is the most beautiful tourist attractions in Indonesia, even in the world, in terms of its diving spots. This place has a typical wild exotic locations as well as luxurious tourists accommodation and nightlife that would make every second of your stay on this island to be very enjoyable. This is a great place for those of you who love challenging adventures, and also cool tourist location for those of you who prefer to relax and enjoy the beauty of exotic Asian country.
